The Today Show on NBC ran a story this week discussing how Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.) is giving credit to ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft for reducing the number of alcohol related crashes.  According to the story, Uber says that its services in South Beach, Miami seem to peek at times when drunk drivers would ordinarily get behind the wheel.  A study performed by M.A.D.D. says that 78% of people polled were less likely to get behind the wheel when they have had too much to drink because of Uber and Lyft.

According to the story, every 52 minutes someone dies as a result of an alcohol related crash.  This amounts to roughly 13,000 alcohol related auto accident deaths per year in the U.S.  However, after the advent and the widespread popularity of these ride sharing apps some states are seeing drastic decreases in the number of alcohol related traffic deaths. I think we can all agree that a reduction in the amount of alcohol related traffic deaths is a good thing, regardless of the cause.  For a link to the Today Show on NBC story click here.
