Bernadette Carter has filed a lawsuit against the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the local chapter at East Carolina University and members of the chapter following the death of her daughter. Carter claims that the sorority's "Hell Week" contributed to the single-car accident that claimed her daughter's life. Carter has filed a wrongful death suit alleging that hazing played a roll in the fatal incident when the 2010 pledges were deprived of sleep and forced to engage in demeaning activities. Carter's daughter was one of two ECU students who died on Nov. 20, 2010 when their car ran off the road and struck a tree. The driver of the car plead guilty last year to two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle claiming that she was suffering from "excessive and overwhelming fatigue, exhaustion and sleep deprivation," and "fell asleep behind the wheel."
As a result of the incident, East Carolina University conducted an investigation which yielded little information, prompting the university to put the sorority on probation for two years. NewsObserver.com reports that the hazing consisted of 17 pledges being forced to live together in a two-bedroom, to bathroom apartment and engage in pushups, wall sits, the "Delta Chair" – Standing on one leg and holding heavy bricks over their heads while being ridiculed and humiliated by the big sisters, "Delta Lipstick" – Having hot sauce rubbed on their lips, "Delta Apple" – Eating a large raw onion, eating large amounts of cottage cheese, and drinking buttermilk.
