CDL Drivers

A Commercial Driver’s License carries with it certain additional penalties. First, you must notify your employer within 30 days of any traffic ticket conviction, regardless of the type of vehicle you were driving. If you are convicted of two “serious violations” in any vehicle within a three-year period, you will lose your CDL for 60 days. Three convictions in a three year period will result in a 120 day suspension. "Serious traffic violations" are:

  • Excessive speeding (15 mph or more over the posted speed limit);
  • Reckless driving;
  • Improper or errtic lane changes;
  • Following a vehicle too closely;
  • Traffic offenses committed in any vehicle in connection with fatal traffic accidents.

If convicted of a driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or controlled substances you will lose your CDL for at least a year. If you are ticketed for any of these violations, whether it be a first or second offense, it is extremely important to address the charges so that you do not risk losing your CDL and your job.
