A North Charleston police officer has been placed on administrative leave after she was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) following a wreck in her cruiser early Monday.
South Carolina Highway Patrol officials said North Charleston Officer Christina Mask is suspected of DUI after being found around 1 a.m. Monday on McMakin Road in Jedburg where she ran off the road in her North Charleston police cruiser and hit a driveway culvert. Summerville Magistrate Court officials said the North Charleston Officer was granted a personal recognizance bond on Monday and released from the Dorchester County Detention Center shortly afterwards.
"My wife called me and she said she heard an explosion out front," said a man who owns the home where the North Charleston officer's car crashed. "I was disturbed. Cops are supposed to be held to a higher standard. But, everyone's human – everyone makes mistakes."
Troopers said Mask was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured. She was not on duty at the time of the wreck. According to court documents, her breath test results showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.17. She was charged with DUI and open container.
North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said Mask has been placed on administrative leave without pay, pending the outcome of the DUI investigation. Pryor said she has been with the North Charleston Police Department since 2009.
