Police records show just a handful of arrests for drunk driving in the Charleston area on New Year's Eve. Both the City of Charleston and North Charleston arrested just one person for driving under the influence (DUI). Charleston County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested two people for drunk driving. They also gave out a ticket for having an open container of alcohol and handled two accidents.
Summerville and Mount Pleasant police each arrested two drivers for DUI. Mt. Pleasant police also arrested five people for public intoxication. In Georgetown County, sheriff's deputies did not make a single arrest for DUI.
Major Jim Brady with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office says public service announcements and local news outlets' efforts to inform the public contributed to the low DUI arrests.
