Charleston DUI

Charleston Police have once again been awarded a $136,014 grant to fund the activities of the department's DUI task force.
The DUI grant was awarded from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety's Office of Highway Safety and will fund two officers in the task force for the next twelve months.

This is the second year that the Charleston Police epartment has received grant funding for DUI enforcement.  Last year the DUI grant was for $227,950.  Charleston Police say that last year the two officers assigend to the DUI task force arrested 87 drivers on suspicion of DUI.

Charleston police say that the increased DUI enforcement has possibly led to a decrease in the number of fatal traffic accidents in the City of Charleston. In 2012, there were twelve traffic fatalities in the city. In 2013, the number of traffic fatalities in the City of Charleston dropped to six. However. In each of those collisions, impairment was found to be a factor. According to the Charleston Police Department, in 2014 there have been six traffic fatalities of which alcohol impairment was found to be a contributing factor in five.
