In 2011, Charleston County had more registered boats than any other South Carolina County at just under 30,000.  In that year 15 boating accidents in Charleston involving 19 total vessels were reported to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Those boat accidents caused six reported injuries and one reported fatality. That is down from 2010, when 20 boating accidents occurred in Charleston involving 31 vessels. Those boat accidents caused 10 reported injuries and 1 reported fatality.

Compared to auto accidents, boating accidents in Charleston seem few and far between. However, every boating accident carries with it the potential to become life threatening. As the summer approaches, please remember to be safe while boating in Charleston's waterways.  If you are injured in a boat accident, be sure to report the incident to the SCDNR.
